SBCP Presents Borodin, Schifrin, and Elgar

April 1, 2023 at 7:30pm

First Presbyterian Church of Santa Barbara, 21 E.  Constance Avenue

Aleksandr Borodin’s “In the Steppes of Central Asia”, an evocative symphonic poem composed in 1880, which Borodin dedicated to Franz Liszt. It was conceived as a soundtrack to a tableau vivant – a now largely forgotten art form in which actors posed motionless in a set, lit to resemble a painting.

Lalo Schifrin’s Tuba Concerto, a piece that spans baroque, 20th-century music, and American jazz, with soloist Chicago Symphony Principal Tuba, Gene Pokorny.

Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a fascinating work he described as “commenced in a spirit of humor and continued in deep seriousness”.
